Captain's Desk from the USS Jamestown ![]() The desk is built slightly out of square to accommodate it's original location. It is built of solid walnut with a dovetailed case, and "one board construction": each side and top is cut from the same single board - full width, no glue joints. Imagine the size of the tree this was milled from! Older repairs on this Empire Era Walnut Butler's style desk have also been documented by signatures on the bottom of one of the drawers showing the person who worked on it, the place and date. It is believed to have been on the Sloop of War, USS Jamestown which was built by the government at the Norfolk Navy Yard in 1844. The Jamestown was the flagship of forces engaged in the suppression of the slave trade off the West Indies, used in the Atlantic Blockading squadron and in the Pacific from Panama to Alaska during the Civil War. She was used as a Public Marine School ship in the Hawaiian Islands and was present in Sitka, Alaska in 1879 when the United States purchased Alaska. After further use as a training ship on the East coast and Europe, the Jamestown was de-commission in 1892 and was destroyed by fire in 1913 in the Norfolk Navy Yard while she was being dismantled.
